The Dream Act – Immigration Law Reform in 2010?

by admin

One of the many changes President Obama has promised America, is the reform of immigration law. Many ideas were discussed. One of them is the DREAM Act, by Senator Lugar of Indiana and Senator Durbin from Illinois, sponsored, among others. The basic idea is that some illegal immigrants who were brought here by their parents at a young age and who were educated in American schools, have their permanent residence.

Under the DREAM Act, some illegal immigrants could become legal residents. The first step of this process is to register for the individual, in some sort of higher education as a university, technical school or apprenticeship program. Another option is to enroll in the U.S. Army. If certain conditions are met, that person can stay in the U.S. are caused by input of an employee or equivalent degree within two years of six years, the first petition, the conditional status can be changed and individuals can have a permanent residence in the United States will be.

To be eligible for permanent residence under the dream, the individual to the United States before he entered 16 years old and has been in the United States for at least five years prior to his. The individual must also demonstrate the ability to speak English.

Conditional residents under the DREAM Act are eligible for private loans to finance their education, but is not eligible for Pell grants. Under the DREAM Act, was 65 000 students each year are caused by residents and to eventually become permanent residents and citizens if they meet the immigration rules and regulations.

One of the ideas behind the DREAM Act is the better use of taxpayers’ money used to make in order to educate young illegal immigrants in public schools across the country. If these young people are prepared to continue their education through additional courses or by the military, would allow them to be a legal part of our society without the fear of losing their families through deportation. Furthermore, the DREAM Act initially only benefits those who are most likely taken over the border from their parents without their own decision. Many of these people have more years in the United States illegally in their country of origin.

The DREAM Act could be fully merged with other laws in connection with the reform of the Immigration Act in 2010. If other ideas do not provide the necessary support from members of Congress, the DREAM Act could be adopted without further reform measures. In every case, even the suggestion of such a scheme is hoped that many people now live in the United States that currently have no way to be resident.
